This job is for a full-time research faculty position in the Opto-Mechanics (OM) Branch in the Electro-Optical Systems Innovation Division (EOSID) with the Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory (EOSL) at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). The main responsibility will be providing optical engineering expertise to conceptualize, design, analyze, build, test, and align optical systems that meet customer requirements and internal research goals. The job provides opportunities to develop advanced technology and publish research.
EOSID’s research is performed in the areas of Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), Intelligent Sensors and Imaging Systems (ISIS), and Lidar and Active Electro-Optic Systems. Our team designs, builds, and tests the hardware that turns “Photons into Knowledge.” Key technical areas include Hyperspectral and Multispectral Imaging Processing; EO System and Component Analysis and Characterization; Optical Imaging and Tagging; and Airborne Lidar System Design, Construction, and Operation for real-time topography, FOPEN, and bathymetry.

- B.S. M.S. or Ph.D in Optical Engineering or related fields
- 0-7 years of professional or graduate experience
- Use optical engineering to develop designs, analysis methods, simulation tools, testing protocols, characterization methods, and alignment plans for both laboratory and rugged electro-optic systems and components.
- Proficiency with Zemax design software or similar.
- Experience with solid modeling and detailed drawings utilizing 3D CAD such as SolidWorks.
- Support optical assembly, alignment, and characterization tasks.
- Perform hands-on testing, data collection, and alignment both in the laboratory and in the field.
- Model optical systems including system optimization, sensitivity analysis, tolerance analysis, error budget allocation, link budget, and performance analysis
- Communicate with outside vendors and suppliers to support system fabrication.
- Ability to present technical details clearly in team meetings as well as interface and brief customers.
- Make component-level decisions from high-level system requirements.
- Write technical reports, user manuals, presentations, and requirements documents.
- Be self-motivated and able to work independently on projects.
- Travel may be involved, as project work may occur at a location other than Atlanta.
- Matlab, C/C++, Python, C#, Visual Studio
- Experience with finite element analysis (FEA).
- Laser design, specification, characterization, and development skills
- Familiarity with manufacturing methods of optical and opto-mechanical components
- Experience with optical metrology instruments such as interferometers
- Experience working in a clean room setting
- Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
- Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas and concepts
- Familiarity with optical materials and detectors used for infrared and visible systems
- Project management or task leadership skills
- Due to requirements of our Federal contracts, candidate must be US citizens capable of holding a DoD security clearance. Active clearances are a major plus.
