Job Details

The successful candidate will perform structural and thermal analysis of optical mechanical instruments from UV to IR. These instruments are designed for space on GEO and LEO platforms, on aircraft, and ground platforms. In addition, the analyst will be responsible for the analysis of special optical ground support equipment (GSE) that supports the flight instruments. The analyst should be an expert user in FEM (finite element method) analysis tools such as SigFit, Nastran, or Abaqus. Experience with other codes is also a plus. The principal analyst is expected to work with the internal customer to establish a set of requirements to do a complete analysis. The optical forms commonly employed are fully reflective, refractive, and catadioptric. The successful candidate should be able to perform the analysis in all six degrees of freedom for each element in case of mechanical deformation, thermal deformation, index of refraction changes with temperature, manufacturing error, alignment errors, etc. The successful candidate will work with opto-mech engineers to tolerance the design and balance the tolerances through a design iteration process to achieve a buildable design that meets performance and cost goals. In addition, the analyst should be aware of stray light issues, and methods to control stray light. The analyst should be aware of physical optics and diffraction effects, especially as they affect systems working with coherent light, like lasers. Some of the target systems are multi-spectral, so knowledge and experience with wavelength dispersive elements and their unique limitations is required. The successful candidate should be familiar with measurement methodologies and tools such that they can contribute to the planning and verification of optical components and systems through a complete structural-optical-thermal-performance (STOP) analysis. The candidate should be able to communicate and describe the design through peer reviews, as well as management, internal and external customers

Basic Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in science, math, or engineering
- Ability to perform finite element and dynamic structural analysis of components, subsystems, and top level assemblies
- Ability to review and sign off on all flight hardware designs; ensure that designs have adequate margin
- Contribute to systems level trades
- Mentor and train junior analysts
- Prior experience overseeing or directing structural tests including definition, planning, requirements, monitoring, data collection and analysis, report writing, and correlation with analysis
- ability to present to all levels of the organization including executive leadership and external customers

Desired skills
- Master's or PhD degree in science, math, or engineering
- Large optics analysis experience
- Space optics analysis experience
- Three mirror or Four mirror anastigmat experience
- Multi-spectral, hyperspectral or laser systems analysis experience
