Lockheed Martin Advanced Energy Storage is commercializing a new class of grid-scale energy storage systems. This is a full-time, design-oriented engineering position to lead the development of new technology from concept through commercialization. This position is located in Cambridge, MA

The mechanical engineer (ME) will engage with other senior technical staff to perform architecture-level trade studies and analyses, with a focus on performance/cost optimization. The ME will lead the design, analysis, testing, and refinement of mechanical systems and sub-systems, and will provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers, drafters, and technicians. The ability to communicate effectively with scientists and engineers, as well as non-technical stake-holders is expected.

The ideal ME will bring significant experience with fluid management systems to the role, including piping design, pump and sensor selection, P&ID development, and component sizing. Solid modeling experience is required (SolidWorks preferred). While this role is oriented toward design, the successful candidate will have the inclination and aptitude to employ quantitative analysis as required.

The ideal candidate will also have familiarity with electrochemical systems, such as fuel cells, batteries (esp. flow), or electrolyzers. Experience leading teams in the design and scale up of electrochemical cell-stacks is highly valued. However, the demonstrated ability to design industrial equipment and successfully transition those designs to production will be prioritized over specific industry experience

Basic Qualifications
• A BS in mechanical or systems engineering or related field and product development experience is required. Solid modeling experience is required
• Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T drawing standards
• An inherent knowledge of design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) principles

Desired skills
• An advanced technical degree is preferred
• Experience with electrochemical systems such as batteries, fuels cells, or electrolyzers, and with electrochemical cell-stacks in specific.
• Solid modeling experience (any CAD package, Solidworks preferred)
• Finite element modeling experience (any software, COMSOL preferred)
• Experience designing equipment to regulatory codes and standards (ex. NFPA, NEC, UL, ASME)
