Job Details

The selected individual will serve as the Mission Operations Thermal lead for the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission) interplanetary spacecraft. In this capacity the candidate will be responsible for preparation and coordination of spacecraft events, predicting operational temperatures and trending thermal data to ensure the thermal control of the spacecraft. This includes the development of detailed simulations in Thermal Desktop. The position requires and understanding of radiation and conduction heater transfer and thermodynamics. The successful candidate will have an understanding of all spacecraft systems and the unique challenges of a deep space mission. As a technical lead, this candidate will work closely with the mission systems engineers, GNC (Guidance Navigation Control) Subsystem and Power Subsystem to ensure the unique Spacecraft mission requirements are achieved. Ability to work in a team environment is essential. Strong interpersonal skills are very important as the individual will work with other program elements, senior management and our NASA customer. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to organize and present issues and requirements in an unambiguous fashion as well as display the ability to provide solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects

Basic Qualifications
-Minimum 5 years professional knowledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics related to space applications, considered very knowledgeable in spacecraft thermal control
- Ability to work irregular work hours in support of planned science activities and contingency recoveries.
- Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment, interacting with other subsystem experts, systems engineers and customers in a timely and effective manner

Desired skills
- Experience with the MAVEN, OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer), and Juno Deep Space Exploration spacecraft.
- Advanced thermal analysis capabilities using Thermal Desktop
-Working knowledge of Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company (SSC) systems engineering process
- Possession of the creativity and innovation necessary to solve issues related to anomalous performance of spacecraft thermal systems
- Ability and willingness to perform technical tasks with limited budget, requiring occasional extended hours
- Minimum 5 years’ experience with Deep Space Exploration spacecraft supporting spacecraft operations on a NASA-managed mission.
- Minimum 3 years experience with the NASA customers including the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the JPL customer
