Description: Conduct basic and applied interdisciplinary research in areas including, but not limited to, mechanical engineering and materials science. Technical activities will be based on program needs, and may include mechanical design, fabrication process development, prototyping, numerical analysis as well as materials and mechanical systems characterization. Leading and supporting all aspects of program development efforts will be required. Identify and develop new research activities aligned with strategic thrusts. Additional responsibilities will be execution of research program tasks including program and task management, report preparation, acquisition and budget oversight as well as interfacing with internal and external stakeholders.

Research Engineer II

  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering.


  • 0-3 years experience performing duties as a Mechanical Engineer.
  • Strong professional and technical communication skills
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with and grow multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience with data acquisition and control instrumentation
  • Numerical and analytical modeling, including structural mechanics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics
  • Technical creativity and resourcefulness in the areas of mechanical, materials and/or biologically inspired design
  • Interest in research program development and project/task management.
  • Interest in mentoring and supervision of junior research engineers and students (undergraduate and graduate)
  • Willingness to travel domestically several times per year


Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens, with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance.
