Mechanical Design Engineer

The Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is seeking a Mechanical Design and Test Engineer, Level 2 or 3.

This individual will be responsible for: conducting the design, analysis, and testing of mechanical, fluid-flow, and heat transfer components for thermal power plants and other energy conversion systems including generating mechanical drawings and writing design reports, assembly procedures, test plans, and test reports. This individual will also manage the procurement of parts and equipment, be the technical point of contact with vendors making parts to mechanical drawings, and to assure the quality of delivered parts. They will also be responsible to assist with higher assembly level test planning, test execution, and test documentation at the direction of the team lead engineer.

    Required experience / skills include:
  • Solid modeling CAD software (Unigraphics/Seimens NX preferred)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills

    Education: This position requires a Bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a Level 2. Additional education/experience required for higher level positions.

    Degrees preferred include: Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Science or Materials Science.

    Candidates will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.

    These are one-year, fixed-term renewable appointments.
