Job Details

Perform as a Research Engineer reporting to the Manager of the Space Technology and Advanced Manufacturing group within the Advanced Development department, Technology Development (TD) directorate of the Advanced Technology Center. The candidate will be part of a research and development integrated product team (IPT) developing Additive Manufacturing products on Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) platforms. The Research Engineer will work closely with the Manufacturing Lead on machine process and parameter development. This position will interact with other disciplines on a daily basis in a complex laboratory environment.
The Research Engineer must be a self-starter, knowledgeable in mechanical testing, aerospace material science, and metallurgy. Candidate must have the ability to develop solutions to difficult engineering issues, either independently or in a team environment. This is a hands-on position operating in a laboratory environment that supports the research and development of complex systems for use in space exploration, navigation, communications, national security and other aerospace and missile related operations. This R&D laboratory environment will provide a place where design, material science, manufacturing and software will enable the development of next generation aerospace products

Basic Qualifications
Master's degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or relevant scientific/engineering field required
Deep understanding of additive manufacturing using LPBF platforms, specifically in the areas of machine troubleshooting, process development, and parameter development
Deep understanding of alloy microstructures and Metallography techniques
Knowledge of nonferrous metals
Experience manufacturing components on LPBF platforms
Experience performing material testing and characterization
Experience with both non-destructive and destructive failure analysis.
Strong technical writing and communication skills

Desired skills
PHD in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or relevant scientific/engineering field
Working knowledge of ASTM type testing
Familiarity with CAD software and Materialise Magics software
Familiarity with machine shop tools
Demonstrated ability to balance working multiple simultaneous projects
Experience with writing research proposals
