The Energy Innovation Department is a multidisciplinary group of engineers and scientists that creates game-changing technologies to advance the use of clean energy. Collaborative expertise in engineering and materials science is focused on topics in energy storage, heat transfer, and energy conversion. Work in the group spans theory, modeling, applied experimentation, and electro/mechanical design.
The department invented the Sandia Cooler, a device where heat is efficiently transferred from a stationary base plate to a rotating structure that combines the functionality of cooling fins with a centrifugal impeller. The Cooler technology has motivated an understanding of fluid mechanics and the transfer of heat in the rotating frame which is now leading to wider applications, as well as scaling to larger systems, such as efficient heat pumps for buildings. The department is involved in large-scale green energy generation and storage as well as improvements to energy-consuming devices for which a large impact can be achieved. A multi-disciplined approach is used to invent valuable “outside-of-the-box” solutions aimed at addressing energy security and strengthening U.S. competitiveness.
The department also leads hydrogen/materials and plasma diagnostics contributions for the DOE/SC Fusion Energy Sciences office. The department operates several experimental laboratories and has several members located in Albuquerque and San Diego (embedded with General Atomics)
