Description: The GTRI CIHER Lab seeks an IT Operations Support Technician (Jr Linux Administrator) for the internal Information Technology group, responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the IT Helpdesk. The CIPHER IT team supports over 250 researchers, engineers, and support staff tackling complex and novel IT challenges for commercial and government customers.  The CIPHER IT team is distributed across multiple campus buildings and also supports a sizable base of remote users across the United States.  The candidate will work closely with the Helpdesk Manager, IT Operations lead, and Infrastructure Lead to facilitate and improve day-to-day IT operations for CIPHER. 

The Operations Technician is expected provide unit level support in the installation, operation and maintenance of Linux based workstations and servers. Position typically addresses a wide variety of applications often involving highly complex issues, working under general supervision while providing work guidance to lower levels.

Job Duties:

  • Install, maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot workstation and peripheral hardware and software.
  • Analyze and resolve complex Linux based workstation, application, and server related problems.
  • Update Linux based desktop software/applications; maintain documentation on installed applications. Provide users with assistance in working in specific applications.
  • Participate in development of standard operating procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate I

  • BS in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) concentration or equivalent.  Sufficient experience may allow for a different BS.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Master’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) concentration or equivalent and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,

Experience: Candidate must possess 2 years of relevant experience in the information technology domain.


  • Candidate must have experience supporting and maintaining heterogeneous computing environments and servers, including Windows, Linux (RedHat Enterprise 6 / 7, CentOS, Ubuntu) and OS X operating systems as part of an IT helpdesk team.
  • This job requires advanced knowledge of and skill in the installation and maintenance of information technology hardware and software, requiring a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures. Included are skills in problem solving, decision making, customer service, system documentation and communications    

Travel Required: 20% travel


  • Candidate must be a US citizen
  • Candidate must be capable of holding a Secret DoD Security clearance.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain DoD Directive 8570.1 IAT Level II compliance within 12 months of hire.


  • Preferred Work Experience: 2-4 years in IT.
  • Preferred Certifications: Security+
  • Preferred Skills: Experience with Windows Server, Windows client, OSX, Linux (RedHat Enterprise 6 / 7, CentOS, Ubuntu), Ubuntu; experience with Jira ServiceDesk, Confluence, JIRA; experience with system staging using automated provisioning tools; experience with virtualization
  • RHEL systems management (Spacewalk, Foreman, etc.)
  • Configuration management (Puppet, Chef, CFengine, Salt Stack, Ansible, etc.)
  • VMware ESXi management (vCenter, vCloud, etc.)
