Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research Lab (CIPHER).  CIPHER conducts applied research focused on cyber threats and countermeasures, secure multi-level information sharing, resilient command and control network architectures, reverse engineering, vulnerability identification, and high performance computing and analytics. GTRI-CIPHER is seeking an Infrastructure Lead for the internal Information Technology group, responsible for managing a team of three full-time professionals and several students.  The CIPHER IT team supports over 250 researchers, engineers, and support staff tackling complex and novel IT challenges for commercial and government customers.  The CIPHER IT team is distributed across multiple campus buildings and supports a sizable base of remote users across the United States.  The candidate will work closely with the CIPHER Lead CSR (Director of IT), the CIPHER Operations Lead to facilitate and improve day-to-day IT operations for CIPHER, and the CIPHER Sponsored Support Branch to provide IT infrastructure solutions to our sponsored projects. 

Outside of internal operations, the Infrastructure Lead is expected to actively participate in sponsored research programs across the laboratory above and beyond providing technology support.  Many of GTRI-CIPHER’s programs require sophisticated information technology platforms and, as such, the Infrastructure Lead will be required to hold a Department of Defense Top Secret clearance.

Job Duties:

  • Provide outstanding Information Technology support to all GTRI-CIPHER employees.
  • Manage the GTRI-CTISL IT Infrastructure Team (Currently 3 full time employees and several students).
  • Manage the GTRI-CIPHER IT Infrastructure:
    • Architect/Design, implement, and maintain the Information Technology infrastructure that CIPHER relies upon.  Including but not limited to:
      • Virtualization Infrastructure
      • Storage Fabrics
      • Networking infrastructure
      • OS Support (Mac OS X, Linux, Windows)
      • Configuration Management across all devices/OSes
      • Backups and Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity
    • The Infrastructure Team will be responsible for completing all Tier III Information Technology Support requests within scope for the help desk team; and providing guidance to Operations Team when needed.
    • Set KPIs and ensure metrics are met.
  • Infrastructure Lead and team will manage hardware/software procurement needs for CIPHER.
  • Partner with the GTRI-CIPHER Operations team to support and maintain the heterogeneous (multiplatform) infrastructure:
    • Perform maintenance, upgrades, and/or deployment.
    • Deploy patches and updates to keep vulnerabilities under control
    • Manage and execute projects or strategic initiatives to improve infrastructure.
  • Support classified systems infrastructure:
    • Perform maintenance, upgrades, and/or deployment.
    • Coordinate IA involvement in support of IT infrastructure for sponsored research programs.
  • Collaboratively create and update system documentation.
  • Collaboratively create and implement SOPs for IT tasks, activities, maintenance, etc.
  • Actively support and contribute to GTRI-CIPHER sponsored research projects.

Education: BS in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) concentration or equivalent.  Sufficient experience may allow for a different BS.  Willingness to pursue advanced degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Security or similar concentration.  A masters is a plus.

Research Engineer / Scientist I

This is the initial rank held by research personnel who have at least a bachelor's degree and who will be performing on a professional level.

Research Engineer / Scientist II

In addition to the years-in-rank requirement, this rank requires one (1) of the following:

  • A Master’s degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree.

Experience: Candidate must possess 5 years of relevant experience in the information technology domain.


  • Candidate must have experience supporting and maintaining heterogeneous computing environments and servers, including Windows, Linux and OS X operating systems.
  • Ideal candidate(s) will have experience managing and staffing a multi-tiered support team.
  • Ideal candidate(s) will have experience managing a server virtualization environment, including storage and networking.
  • Ideal candidate(s) will have experience supporting classified computing environments and collaborating with information assurance security staff on IT-related matters.


  • Candidate must be a US citizen and be capable of holding a Top Secret DoD Security clearance.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain DoD Directive 8570.1 IAT Level II compliance within 6 months of hire.

Travel Required: 20% travel
