The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) develops performance and other product standards/technical documents for the electro and medical imaging industries; crafts and executes advocacy campaigns; and provides analytical product and services to assist Member companies with business decisions.

Industry Director- Lighting Systems Division will assess the current state of lighting systems and products, evaluate potential future developments especially those arising from the Internet of Things (IoT), create strategic plans for the Division product areas and achieve the goals of those plans.. The incumbent will provide leadership to expand NEMA capabilities in and services to the lighting industry with increased emphasis on the convergence of information technology and lighting.

The Industry Director will work in a matrixed organization providing direction to efforts that encompass both domestic standards (e.g. NEMA, American National Standards Institute) and international standards including the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).  In addition, the incumbent will coordinate Division work provided by Government Relations, Business Information Services, and Communications Departments

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the subject matter expert on lighting systems and products and sharpen NEMA focus on IoT
  • Build effective and persistent personal lines of communication with NEMA member companies, US government agencies; and international regulatory bodies.
  • Develop and execute annual budgets including possible supplementary funds additions; oversee all contracts with outside vendors arising from these responsibilities; and remain on or under budgeted thresholds.
  • Represent NEMA and assigned industry sector(s) by writing papers and reports, presenting materials at national and international settings and serving on various committees


  • Undergraduate degree required; advanced degree and/or technical degree with IoT relevance a strong plus.
  • Seven or more years full-time experience in related fields including IoT and/or systems controls
  • Knowledge of technical standards development process strongly desired
  • Demonstrated results-oriented leadership expertise
  • Excellent program management abilities including strong planning, time management, and budgeting skills
  • Proven ability to clearly and persuasively write, speak, and represent while demonstrating executive presence
  • Ability to quickly, fairly and diplomatically drive collaborative groups to agreed positions and resolve conflicts as they arise
  • Customer focused entrepreneurial and eager to take on new challenges
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.  Experience using online collaboration systems a plus
