Job Details

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

The mission of the Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD) is to develop and construct state-of-the-art superconducting magnets for application in accelerators and detectors and to maintain and further develop the expertise and facilities in specialized high technology areas essential for this work. The Division has made important contributions to the construction of many accelerator facilities around the world, from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at BNL to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and the SuperKEKB facility at KEK. Ongoing projects include contributions to the Accelerator Upgrade Project for the High Luminosity LHC upgrade and construction of a large-bore 25T solenoid for the Center for Axion and Precision Physics in Korea.

Over the years, the SMD has pioneered a number of advances in magnet design and construction, such as the two-for-one magnets used in the LHC rings, the common coil design for high field magnets, and the direct wind technique for superconducting helical dipole magnets used in the complex interaction region magnets at colliders in Japan and China. The Division is presently developing specialized magnets and interaction region designs that satisfy the requirements of a future Electron-Ion Collider. Recent upgrades to the facilities include improvements to the vertical magnet test facility as part of the Hi-Luminosity upgrade of the LHC at CERN.

The SMD comprises 30 staff (including scientists, engineers and technicians), and an annual budget of approximately $7M.

Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks a distinguished experimental scientist with an international reputation in the area of superconducting magnet technology to lead the Superconducting Magnet Division. The Superconducting Magnet Division Head will report to the Associate Laboratory Director for Nuclear and Particle Physics.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific rank dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills he or she brings to the position, as well as the amount of distinguished scientific contributions and experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide and execute a vision matched to the Laboratory's overall strategic plan
  • Attract, retain, and foster the development of a team of talented and innovative magnet experts, whose expertise matches the needs of the Laboratory including the operation of RHIC
  • Stimulate collaboration between SMD staff and scientists at BNL and other institutions
  • Integrate, prioritize, and manage the Division's diverse R&D efforts
  • Oversee business planning that establishes an appropriate balance among projects and ensure that these efforts are carried out in compliance with relevant ESH policies of the Laboratory
  • Communicate the Division's efforts and business model effectively to a broad group of stakeholders

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in Physics or other closely related field
  • At least 20 years of distinguished experimental scientific experience in of which at least 10 years of research experience beyond the Ph.D. degree is required
