MIT’s Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Office seeks an electrical safety engineer to serve in a leadership role and provide expert advice in support of Institute academic and business objectives with due consideration of electrical code compliance, occupational health and safety laws, federal and state regulations, and good practices.


MIT EHS is responsible for overseeing operational EHS management at MIT; providing EHS services to departments, laboratories, and centers; supporting MIT's commitment to EHS performance beyond compliance; and delivering services that demonstrate MIT's commitment to EHS stewardship. These services relate to a wide range of areas, from environmental sustainability and occupational safety to chemical, radiation, and biological controls. EHS is committed to providing the responsive service and critical support needed to make MIT a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible place to live, work, and study.



  • Assist the associate director with management of the EHS Electrical Safety Program
  • Perform the duties and responsibilities of an EHS senior officer and function as an integral member of a multidisciplinary EHS office, providing advice on research and operations, building projects, and experiments relative to safety concerns
  • Work across campus and with other organizations to ensure a safe work place and educational environment at all times
  • Address concerns from federal, state and local officials relative to the safety of the general public as they may be impacted by the EHS Electrical Safety Program
  • Represent the Institute and the department with clients, suppliers, and outside engineering/architectural firms to address important internal or external electrical system design and operation challenges


Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in engineering (advanced degree desirable)
  • Expertise with the application and review of National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements
  • A minimum of five years’ experience with low and medium voltage systems design, construction, preventive maintenance, building systems, and planning and schematic design reviews
  • Project management, planning, and collaborative working skills
  • Ability to focus on the global picture and direction while understanding and monitoring the everyday electrical system details and operations throughout the campus


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A degree in electrical engineering
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Massachusetts
  • Experience in research setting
