Job Details

The Engineering Department provides engineering expertise, construction project management, technical services, and support to Central Arizona Project (CAP) and is seeking an experienced Electrical or Senior Electrical Engineer to provide discipline expertise to CAP's capital improvement projects and internal asset modernization process.

CAP is the largest supplier of renewable water in the state of Arizona. We operate and maintain a 336 mile long aqueduct and pumping plant system that stretches from our source at the Colorado River to the communities of central and southern Arizona. On a yearly basis, we pump and deliver over 1.5 million acre-feet of water to enhance the state’s economy and quality of life and ensure sustainable growth for current and future populations of Arizonans. CAP is highly respected and takes great pride in providing the people of Arizona this service reliably, cost effectively and in an environmentally sound manner with the highest regard for employee safety and health, evolving public needs and customer satisfaction. Central Arizona Project is a family of caring people who work with pride to create a safe, supportive and friendly workplace.

Working as an Electrical or Senior Electrical Engineer, you would be exposed to a wide variety of equipment and technical challenges. This may consist of items such as power transformers, medium voltage circuit breakers, large synchronous motors and associated systems (excitation controllers, protective relaying, etc.), low voltage pumping plant ancillary systems, and short circuit/arc flash studies.

We employ nearly 500 people who enjoy the close community of a small company while helping to fulfill our extremely valuable mission. We offer highly competitive salaries and excellent benefits including membership in the Arizona State Retirement System, partial employer matching of 401(k) contributions, medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage, 4-10 work schedule, and significant investment in employee training and development. Eligibility for benefits begins on the first day of employment. CAP is truly a great place to work!

In this position you will guide CAP in identifying and implementing solutions to technical engineering problems while working to ensure that technical documentation is accurate, complete, and retrievable. You will be a member of multi-disciplined project teams focused on modernizing assets and maintaining reliable water deliveries to CAP customers. A few of the specific responsibilities include:

  • Provide complete and professional design services and technical leadership for the purpose of planning and constructing new features of CAP and modifying, operating, and maintaining existing features of CAP.

  • Interact and coordinate with various engineering disciplines including Civil, Mechanical, Controls, and Communications on a daily basis for a wide variety of projects.

  • Prepare, conduct, and organize technical studies and investigations. Examples may include arc flash analysis, power factor correction, and short circuit calculations.

  • Review design work by external consultants, construction contract submittals, and provide technical input on adherence to codes and standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE). This position has the opportunity to interact in the field with consultants, maintenance personnel, and external contractors on a regular basis.

  • Create and maintain records (drawings, specifications, design assumptions, internal and external contact history, calculations, etc.) that reflect the condition and history of CAP assets.

For the Engineer position: five (5) years of applicable electrical engineering experience with a Bachelor of Science degree in the field of Electrical Engineering; or three (3) years of engineering experience with a Master's in Electrical Engineering is required. Registration as a professional engineer is a plus.

For the Senior Engineer position: registration as a professional engineer is required, along with eight (8) years of applicable electrical engineering experience with a Bachelor’s; or six (6) years with a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
