General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) is a supplier of advanced electromagnetic systems, related power equipment and other high technology products for a variety of government and commercial applications. These include products such as the design and fabrication of linear motors, superconducting and conventional rotating motors, power inverters, high-energy capacitors, radiation monitoring systems, high-voltage direct current power distribution systems, and numerous other products.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Electrical Engineer to join our Component Engineering team located in San Diego, CA. Under general directions with limited review, this position is responsible for applying innovative approaches to resolving unusual or complex engineering problems.
**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:**
+ Work in a multi-disciplinary group with other Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Control Engineers, Software Engineers and applied physicists to produce designs and prototype hardware for internal and external customers
+ Utilizes expertise with design and analysis tools such as AutoCAD, Pro-Engineer, MatLab, MathCAD, SPICE and or Simplorer
+ Demonstrates strong analytical-based design skills, performing trade studies, developing conceptual designs, and maturing those designs into the production phase, often in an environment where requirements are often changing
+ Demonstrates a deep understanding of structural design, materials selection, appropriate selection and application of stress criteria, write technical reports, generate process documentation, participate in vendor selection, and provide manufacturing oversight
+ Provides direction to manufacturing, test, subcontracts staff or technician staff
+ Leads the coordination on all activities between design engineering, Quality Assurance, procurement, program office, planning, configuration management, vendor and customer
+ Reviews documents findings and implement solutions and communicates results to engineering staff
+ Advises management/engineering staff and the program office of the status of work in progress, material availability, and potential design/production problems to ensure that personnel, equipment, materials and services are provided as needed
+ Works with manufacturing engineering and project management to resolve any design related issue impacting production and to improve product design
+ Provides technical evaluations to support procurement decisions
+ Supports and resolves issues and problems at the test site to support test schedule
+ Develops procurement documents and specifications, Statement of Work (SOW) documents and proposals support for engineered components and assemblies.
+ Present design and analysis with clarity for reviews, and produce all documents to meet strict configuration management procedures
+ Mentors junior level engineers
+ Demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and understanding of Integrated Schedule and Earned Value Systems
+ Performs other duties as assigned or required

+ Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a masters degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
+ Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
+ Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
+ Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and, lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single component projects.
+ Able to work extended hours as required.
