Job Details

Assist in the daily operations of the Space Operations Simulation Center (SOSC), a state-of-the-art six degree-of-freedom robotics laboratory used for testing space based relative navigation, rendezvous, and docking technologies. The SOSC is staffed by a small team of experts in diverse engineering fields. The selected candidate will be primarily responsible for operating and maintaining the SOSC electrical systems including the master timing system, laser alignment systems, data acquisition systems, communications systems, fiber optic and Ethernet networks, and robot control systems. The candidate will also help design and build prototype sensors and electronics. The candidate will interface with customers of the SOSC to help them define, develop, and execute their test needs

Basic Qualifications
Knowledge and experience in the design, simulation, and manufacture of electrical and electronic circuits to support the development of specialized interfaces to sensors and effectors used in the Space Operation Simulation Center as well as the construction of new sensors. Experience developing and testing prototype electronics especially in the field of sensor development. Experience with common sensor interfaces such as RS422, GigE, USB, and UDP/TCP Internet Protocol, and fiber optic networks. Practical experience with developing complex timing systems for synchronizing multiple elements of a test network including data acquisition units, sensors, and robots. Familiarity with test instrumentation such as accelerometers, laser power meters, oscilloscopes, and data acquisition systems.
Basic coding skills are required in order to develop interface software to control sensors and to process sensor telemetry and data.
Qualified candidate must be able-bodied, capable of working on elevated platforms, able to successfully complete Environmental, Safety and Health(ESH) required skills training, such as the operation of Personnel Aerial Lift Devices (PALD), bridge cranes, Laser Safety and affiliated eye exams, Material Handling and other modules
Qualified candidate must be capable of proper engineering discipline in the area of documentation and presentation, and is expected to maintain the engineering promptly and accurately
Experience and skill in customer interaction and presentation will be expected

Desired skills
Fundamental knowledge of Guidance Navigation and Control systems, especially related to GN&C sensors, is highly desired.
It is highly desired that the candidate have a strong working knowledge and experience of software coding for the purpose of developing software tools that can be used to improve automation in the Space Operations Simulation center and to interface with sensors and robots. Desired coding skills include C++, Matlab, Java, and Python in descending importance. Familiarity with the Texas Instruments line of MSP microcontrollers is highly desired including the ability to code these microcontrollers.
The ability to work within a team of diverse skillsets without much oversight is highly desired as is the discipline to thoroughly complete the tasks at hand, including closeout and maintenance
