Job Details

The X-ray Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source invites applications for an engineer staff position to join the Detectors Group (https://www1.aps.anl.gov/Detectors). We are developing transition edge sensor microcalorimeters and data acquisition systems for pixel array detectors for X-ray science. The successful candidate will play a key role in the superconducting and semiconducting detector effort at the Advanced Photon Source. In particular, we are looking for a candidate who has a passion for electronics in particular microwave/RF, signal processing and high-speed digital communication.

Requirements

Required:

  • Extensive experience in FPGA programming, including DSP algorithms and software-defined radio.
  • Strong knowledge ofmicrowave engineering andlow noise electronics, including abroad knowledge base including filters, amplifiers, mixers, RF cabling, A/D and amp; D/A converters, and control hardware and software.
  • Excellent software engineering skills (Python, Qt, C, etc).
  • Exceptional communication skills, ability to communicate effectively with internal and external collaborators and ability to work in team environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience with high-speed data acquisition systems, especially for detectors.
  • Experience interfacing high speed A/D, D/A and communication interfaces (Ethernet, I2C, SPI, zeroMQ).
  • Familiarity with current advanced FPGA development tools (e.g. Xilinx Vivado, Verilog, VHDL, Simulink).
  • Experience with schematic capture tools such as OrCAD and PCB layout or PCB viewer tools from Cadence Allegro or equivalent.
  • Experience with Spice or other analog circuit simulation software.
  • Experience with superconducting and semiconducting physics detectors/sensor measurements.
  • Good understand of detector physics to better understand the interactions between the electronics and physical instruments.
  • Experience with control system software development (EPICSand/or LabView).
  • Experience testing low-temperature devices and operation of cryogenic refrigerators.

Though not required, the level of scientific knowledge and sophistication normally associated with a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics or Applied Physics would be relevant.
