MITRE is looking to expand its Charlottesville small Unmanned Aerial System (sUAS, aka drone) team. The team is comprised of experts in drone design, mechatronics, software engineering, physics, technical intelligence collection, and tactical operations. This highly refined and focused team works the problem from end-to-end; working directly with users to collect requirements, and in turn rapidly develop, iterate, and deploy solutions. Their goal is to push innovation to the tactical edge looking to fill mission needs in weeks rather than years.

The team is recognized internationally for its work in the development of cutting edge 3D printable drones that can be built by Privates or Generals. Their systems have been built everywhere from fab labs to tents in Kuwait and in support of the intelligence community, special forces, and the United States Marine Corps.

The team is also known for its work in cutting-edge counter-sUAS knowledge and research as part of its counter terrorism mission. In 2017, National Geographic aired a documentary (Breakthroughs: Game of Drones) in 170 countries on the teams work-related MITRE c-sUAS Grand Challenge.

Additionally, the teams work has been featured in WIRED, Popular Science, the Economist, Defense Systems, Fortune, Smithsonian Magazine, and National Geographic Magazine. The work has been presented at both the White House and on Capitol Hill as well as multiple international drone and defense conferences.

This is a highly competitive recruitment, early career position (less than 7 years post bachelors degree), that is seeking a multi-disciplinary candidate with experience in drones/robotics, 3D printing, CAD design, mechatronics, and computer programming in multiple languages. The candidate will be expected to work on a team that is both local to Charlottesville and across the country. The candidate will be expected to travel to various events around the world and be able to interact with government personnel at all levels. The candidate will need to be eligible for a security clearance.
