In a joint appointment procedure, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft are seeking to fill the following position to be exercised in conjunction at the earliest possible date:

Director (f/m) of the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS

Professor (W3) „Smart Systems Integration“

Chemnitz University of Technology and the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS collaborate in the discipline of smart systems integration. The professorship is associated with the post of director of Fraunhofer ENAS, which has 135 employees. The duties of director span the scientific-technical and entrepreneurial management and development of the institute within the Fraunhofer model and the overall strategy of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Furthermore, the holder of the professorship is also a member of the board of directors of the faculty’s Center for Microtechnologies (ZfM) and, if applicable, president of ZfM (elective office). Active involvement in the management of large research projects and groups (research center MAIN, Cluster of Excellence MERGE) is expected. The main focus is the development of smart systems that are integrated in specific applications using micro and nano technologies as well as heterogenous systems integration. Specific emphasis is placed on the practical orientation of the research work. In your new role, you expertly represent the central topics through research and academic teaching as well as in your research and technology management with respect to research funding bodies and research partners, and you build up a strategic link between the university and the Fraunhofer Institute.

Essential requirements:

-     Excellent scientific qualifications and many years of experience in managing and leading large interdisciplinary research groups as well as in the strategic planning, acquisition and implementation of large national and international research and development projects, especially in collaboration with German and European industry

-     Activities and experience in research (capacity and willingness to raise third-party funds, scientific excellence and visibility, promoting young scientists)

-     Willingness for closer interdisciplinary cooperation between professorships at Chemnitz University of Technology and other Fraunhofer Institutes as well as with industry

-     Activities and experience in academic teaching (in particular, a capacity and willingness to take over courses taught in English), focusing on courses in technologies for microelectronics and state-of-the-art micro and nano systems as well as courses in system concepts and integration technologies for smart systems

-     Activities and experience in the transfer of knowledge as well as a willingness to assume the functions of academic self governance

Also advantageous:

-     Experience in several of the following research areas: micro and nano technologies; microsystems engineering; sensors and actuators; optoelectronics; microfluidics; system integration and smart system applications

-     International activities and experience in research, teaching and transfer of knowledge with particular evidence of teaching skills

-     The capacity and willingness to apply new teaching and learning methods in further training and engage in public relations activities

The appointment requirements are set out in Section 58 of the Saxon Academic Freedom in Higher Education Act (SächsHSFG). The additional academic achievements required for this position are demonstrated through a junior professorship, postdoctoral qualification or equivalent academic position.
