Farmingdale State College - Dean, School of Engineering Technology

Farmingdale State College, a campus of the State University of New York, seeks a Dean to lead its School of Engineering Technology. The successful candidate will assume the dean's duties beginning January 2018.

Farmingdale State College is a public college of applied science and technology with an enrollment of more than 9,200 undergraduate and graduate students and a rich history of over 80,000 graduates. As the largest of SUNY's colleges of technology, Farmingdale equips students with the resources and knowledge sought by today's emerging industries. A total of 34 undergraduate degree programs are offered within four schools: Arts & Sciences, Business, Engineering Technology, and Health Sciences. Academic programs also include a graduate program beginning in the Fall of 2017. Small classes with nationally recognized faculty, technology-enhanced classrooms, state-of-the-art information services as well as a highly successful NCAA Division III athletics program, make Farmingdale State one of the fastest-growing colleges in the region, and in the State University of New York system.

Located on 380 lush acres in the heart of Long Island, approximately 45 minutes from New York City, Farmingdale was named as one of the best colleges in the North in US News and World Report 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Farmingdale is proud of its many graduates with 91% indicating that they are continuing their education or are working in their field of specialization. College Choice listed FSC in its list of "50 Safest Small Colleges and Universities" for 2016.

The School of Engineering Technology includes Departments of Aviation, Automotive Technology, Architecture and Construction Management Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Security Systems and Law Enforcement Technology. The Institute for Research and Technology Transfer (IRTT), Renewable Energy and Sustainability Center (RESC) and Infrastructure and Transportation Security Center (ITSC) are also overseen by the Dean. This 12-month full-time administrator sets the vision and direction for the School of Engineering Technology. The Dean provides leadership in curriculum development, faculty development, establishment of plans and standards for student recruitment and retention, and ensures that the standards for specialized accreditation are being met. Working with off-campus agencies/affiliations and securing grants to advance the academic programs and mission for the School of Engineering Technology is essential. The Dean works collaboratively with the academic administration team under supervision of the Provost and acts as the official channel for communication regarding all matters among the school, the Provost, the President, and the other schools. The Dean directs all instructional programs and staff and provides direction and leadership in the initiation, development, implementation and evaluation of programs within the school. The Dean works with the Office of Development and Philanthropy to identify cultivate and solicit non-state, private resources for the school.

The Dean supervises the recruitment and selection of all new faculty and staff according to established College procedures and allocates personnel to the various departments within the school. Responsibilities include overseeing evaluation of all faculty and instructional support staff for appointment, reappointment, tenure, promotion, dismissal, discretionary salary adjustments, and other matters within the departments and the school. In consultation with the Provost, the Dean establishes and monitors all budget allocations to academic departments and offices within the school. Deans carry out other powers, duties, and responsibilities as may be assigned by the President and the Provost.


  • An earned Ph.D. from a regionally accredited institution in one of the disciplines of the School of Engineering Technology or a related discipline.
  • A record of scholarly achievement and professional eligibility for tenure at the full professor level is required.
  • A minimum of five years of administrative experience in the role of academic department chair, assistant dean, associate dean, or a position that offered similar leadership opportunity and professional growth.

A successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A commitment and ability to relate to and work with students in various aspects of their academic pursuits.
  • Proven ability to provide program leadership and development.
  • Experience in shared governance.
  • Good interpersonal, management and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated success working with a team to attain institutional goals.
  • Ability to make decisions in a consultative and informed manner.
  • Ability to establish organizational priorities and make difficult choices among competing demands.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.


  • Experience in creating programs/policies for student recruitment/retention.
  • Experience with assessment/accreditation of academic programs/institutions.
  • Experience at a four year teaching institution.
  • Experience in working with diverse populations.
