The Payload Launch Sites Support Services (PLSSS) Program within SSC provides all launch processing support functions for Office of Space Launch (OSL). The program’s two primary operating locations are Vandenberg AFB, CA and Cape Canaveral AFS, FL. Key elements of the PLSSS program scope include satellite launch processing, satellite transport operations, satellite propellant loading operations, and satellite processing facilities O&M, clean room operations, and safety and environmental services

The Material & Process Engineer will work with an engineering and technical team responsible to manage cleanroom, contamination control, and materials engineering disciplines. This person will work within a multifunctional engineering organization to deliver satellite vehicle launch base processing requirements to the Eastern Processing Facility. Tasks will include planning, requirements integration, system modification, test procedure development, generation of work authorizing documents, contamination reports preparation and submittal to Mission Operations Integration for delivery to programs, and real-time operations oversight..

Responsibilities will include:

• Operation, maintenance and implementation of contamination controls for all cleanroom systems, including sensor systems such as particle counter and photoionization detectors for volatile hydrocarbons, technical vacuum and facility vacuum.

• Continuing revision and maintenance of cleanroom facility specific documents including the EPF Contamination Control Plan, Facility Materials Use Plan and system preventive maintenance procedures.

• Presentation of status and findings of the contamination control engineering deliverables and issues at project meetings and reviews such as mission working group meetings and mission requirements

• Development of new contamination sensor systems, such as particle size distribution enumeration using image analysis microscopy and real-time assessment of surface molecular contamination using SAW technology

• Ability to use materials knowledge and experience in the evaluation of equipment/materials acceptability in the cleanroom and space environment

• Certification of cleanroom spaces to ISO 14644-1 and -2

• Discern probable causes of exceeded particle levels, airborne and surface molecular contamination and volatile hydrocarbons in the cleanroom environment

The applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information

Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics with at least 5 years of related experience. In lieu of a degree, candidates who have 13 years of relevant experience will also be considered

• Contamination Control or cleanroom Engineering experience

• Must be a United States citizen

• Must be able to obtain a security clearance and special access as set forth by the U.S. Government and must be willing to undergo the process required to obtain the clearance

Desired skills
• Knowledge of ISO 14644 series, IEST Recommended Practices and related ASTM guidelines in cleanroom, contamination control and materials
