The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Work Program is seeking a Chief Engineer as part of our team who can be an extraordinary technical leader to help achieve our many future challenges. An effective missile defense capability is a high priority mission outcome for the DOD and the Nation. While this has always been the case, current events in the world are raising the stakes even higher. There are extraordinary technical challenges that must be overcome to achieve success. The MITRE Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Work Program is over 110 staff years of support across virtually all MDA elements engineering, sensors, weapons systems, command and control, cyber and all phases of MDA program lifecycles. We are a geographically and technically diverse workforce with key presences in McLean, VA; Huntsville, AL; Bedford, MA; Dahlgren, VA; and Colorado Springs, CO working at both MITRE and sponsor sites. We partner actively to access a wide range of technical skills from across MITRE to address MDAs most pressing challenges.


The MDA Program Division Chief Engineer collaborates with the Technical Director and Portfolio Director to develop strategy, shape the technical work program, mentor the work force, and oversee execution of a strong work program aligned to the outcomes of our sponsors. The Chief Engineer is the technical voice of the MDA Program leadership team, managing work definition and execution while also pushing us to innovate. The Chief Engineer serves as a technical contributor, leader, and advisor on the most challenging technical issues we address for our MDA sponsors.


The candidate selected for this position will provide technical and domain leadership across the work program to include the following key functions:

  • As part of the division leadership team, develop strategic technical goals and outcomes that will guide division investments, initiatives, and the development of technical talent, labs, and training. Define and develop the necessary technical capabilities of our staff. Help shape a high-quality, high-impact work program aligned to the MDAs most critical mission outcomes and maximize the value we deliver to our MDA sponsors.

  • Serve as a senior technical advisor for key areas of the MDA work program, engaging closely with project leaders and our senior sponsors. Make critically needed technical contributions to important projects across the MDA Portfolio. Lead or participate in senior-level review teams (red teams, independent technical assessments, and special studies). Participate as MITREs technical leader and senior advisor for MDA sponsor project reviews.

  • Serve as an internal and external technical and domain thought leader across the MDA Program to include developing and presenting innovative approaches to sponsor challenges. Foster a culture of technical creativity and excellence focused on achieving sponsor and mission outcomes. Set an example as a continuous learner and take an active role mentoring and growing the divisions talent.

  • Lead division innovation efforts by increasing the representation of MDA Portfolio key problems in the MIP, facilitating engagements between MITRE researchers and sponsors, and overseeing the transition of MIP research to address sponsors mission outcomes. Seek and cultivate partnerships with peers in other MITRE portfolios, programs, and technical centers, academia, industry, and other Government labs to bring the best solutions to sponsors and push MITREs products to the cutting-edge.

  • Define and lead the MDA Program technical quality process. Create and execute technical review and peer review processes that apply the appropriate level of technical vetting throughout product development.  Working with the Portfolio Director and Technical Director, identify and develop domain capability areas (DCAs) for the division.

  • Collaborate with other Division and Sector Chief Engineers to optimize and leverage capabilities from across the Corporation to the benefit of MDA and other portfolios.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • An MS or PhD degree

  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in a technical field of relevance to the MDA work program.
Required Skills:

  • Track record of developing S&T strategies, technical strategies, goals and outcomes designed to guide investments, initiatives, and the development of technical talent, labs, and training.

  • Demonstrated ability to partner throughout a large organization and with appropriate external technology organizations, companies, and thought leaders.

  • Expert knowledge in several technical and/or domain areas relevant to MITREs MDA work program.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Expert-level ability to communicate in domain and technical terms, with both the engineering staff and senior sponsor leadership.

  • Executive-level interpersonal skills and facility interacting across the corporation and with senior customers, up to and including Senior Civilian and General Officer level.

  • Ability to develop trust relationships and work collaboratively across organizations.

  • Current TS/SCI security clearances.
