Job Description

We have an opening for a Director/Division Leader to lead a staff of 120 research scientists to meet the goals and objectives of its customers and stakeholders. You will provide management oversight and technical leadership in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division, specifically in the areas of high-performance computing, mathematics, computer science, and scientific computing. This position requires interactions with LLNL programs, Laboratory managers, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, University of California, other academic institutions, regulatory agencies, and industry. The CASC Director is a member of the Computation Directorate senior management team. This position is 50% funded. You will be required to secure the remaining 50% funding in the form of another technical assignment.

Essential Duties
- Establish a long term tactical plan and provide oversight of the research and development activities in CASC to ensure the creation, maintenance, and enhancement of underlying core competencies.
- Provide leadership and technical direction to effectively manage the division's scientific staff including management and project leads, ensure the team's programmatic milestones and deliverables are met.
- Maintain and build CASC's world-class technical expertise in scientific computing and research.
- Develop, maintain, and enhance engagement with current and potential sponsors, industrial and academic partners, and other stakeholders.
- Lead the development of new program opportunities, including the definition, development, and preparation of research proposals and interaction with potential sponsors and customers.
- Responsible for comprehensive performance management and evaluation of the staff including employee performance measures, ranking process, salary management, and career development.
- Establish strategic plans to ensure an effective system for recruiting, hiring and retaining high quality scientific staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computer or data science, computational science, or related field or the equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
- Experience with LLNL programs and the role of discipline support organizations.
- Extensive experience managing and leading a technical organization, including knowledge of strategic planning, organizational dynamics, workforce management processes, financial management, and project/program management.
- Expert level and effective communication, negotiation, facilitation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills necessary to lead and influence Laboratory leadership and interact effectively with all levels of management and staff, both internal and external to LLNL.
- Proven record of scientific creativity, achievement and leadership, as documented in publications and professional recognition.
- Expert written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly and accurately convey technical content and value propositions to both expert and non-expert audiences.
- Significant supervisory experience, including experience in development and implementation of performance reviews, ranking, and salary management; lead, motivate, and build complex interdisciplinary teams to work programmatic and institutional goals including demonstrated ability to set clear goals and expectations, and communicate them to customers and performers.

Desired Qualifications (optional)
In-depth knowledge and understanding of Laboratory programs.
Experience working with DOE programs and DOE program managers.
