New York University’s Music and Audio Research Laboratory (MARL) and NYU’s Center for Data Science invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin in September 2018. This a joint position between the two centers, with academic tenure housed in NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions. POSITION DESCRIPTION: We seek applicants who can contribute both to methods and foundational knowledge in data science, as well as novel data-driven applications to music/sound search, scholarship, practice, learning, enjoyment and distribution. Interest area and field of specialization are open, although we are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to research and teaching in sub-fields of music/sound data science including, but not limited to: large-scale music/sound information retrieval, particularly text/symbol retrieval and natural language processing for mining information in the web and social media; machine learning, signal processing and/or high dimensional statistics applied to music and sound; music/sound ontologies, semantic web technologies, and graph-based approaches to knowledge representation and analysis; music/sound search, recommendation and personalization; lyrics and score analysis/retrieval; cross-modal analysis of music behaviors and interactions including from sound, video and wearable devices; and/or optical music recognition.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Conduct research; teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students; contribute to the teaching missions of both the Music Technology program and the Center for Data Science; participate in faculty meetings; serve on committees, bridge the existing research strengths of the Music and Audio Research Laboratory and the Center for Data Science.
