W Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology, McMaster University


The W Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at McMaster University are seeking an outstanding individual for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (exceptional candidates may be considered for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor). The candidate will engage in the delivery of the Faculty of Engineering’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation programs and is expected to be recognized for excellence in one or more areas of engineering practice, research and teaching, specifically engineering entrepreneurship related to technology-based innovation in a corporate or start-up setting.

McMaster’s large, attractive campus, the interior of which is open only to pedestrians and cyclists, is at the western end of Lake Ontario. The University is minutes from downtown Hamilton, a city rich in history and culture with a vibrant arts community. Nearby recreational and conservation attractions include Cootes Paradise, the Bruce Trail, the Niagara Escarpment, the Waterfront Trail, and the Royal Botanical Gardens. Surrounded by spectacular nature and unique neighbourhoods, Hamilton is ideally located halfway between Toronto and Niagara Falls.

The Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University has a reputation for innovative programs, cutting-edge research, leading faculty, and aspiring students. It has earned a strong reputation as a centre for academic excellence and innovation. The Faculty has approximately 180 faculty members, along with close to 5,500 undergraduate (4,200 in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and 1,250 in the W Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology), 425 Master’s students, and 340 PhD students. The Faculty of Engineering promotes a nurturing and inclusive environment where opportunities are made available for personal growth and professional development.

The W Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology is home to the McMaster-Mohawk Bachelor of Technology Partnership and hosts a number of professional masters level programs in Engineering Practice oriented to the development of leadership and entrepreneurial competencies.

Applicants will hold a Ph.D. in engineering or a closely related discipline, with extensive industrial or social experience in developing and deploying new technologies, or starting new companies. The capability of functioning in academic, business/industry and public sector environments, and being invested in experiential and problem-based learning is important, as is openness to the role of inquiry in the classroom. Applicants will be expected to establish a strong externally funded research program, actively supervise graduate students and aspiring entrepreneurs, and foster existing or new collaborations with external stakeholders in the local innovation ecosystem as well as other Departments and Faculties. Evidence of proven leadership skills, innovation credentials, excellence in service, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures is also required. Registration as a Professional Engineer of Ontario or eligibility to acquire registration in Canada would be a strong asset.
