This position is responsible to manage the operation of the New Haven Catenary Department in accordance with Metro-North Railroad Power Department standards. In addition, the position ensures system reliability and compliance with safety to continue providing a safe environment for our employees and customers, consistent with corporate goals.



Provide operational response, leadership, and manage the 24/7 operation of New Haven Catenary Department, to ensure the safety of our employees and provide safe reliable service to our customers. This includes direct supervision of Senior Engineers, who are responsible for the operation, maintenance and capital construction support of the electric traction power infrastructure, High Tension Line Systems, Catenary systems, and Signal Power Systems. Coordinate with the Power Departments compliance area.

Report directly to the Assistant Chief Engineer of Power Operation to ensure compliance with Power Department policies and procedures for Roadway worker safety, electrical safety and the corporate compliance.

Provide mentoring and guidance to the Senior Engineers with the focus on succession planning and preserving institutional knowledge.

Attend staff meeting with senior Power Department staff. Represent the power department at meeting with senior staff, utilities, The Capital Department, The AEM department, and other operating departments at Metro North. Interface with design office to update and maintain system prints and plate books.

Work with Human Resources to fill vacancies in the New Haven Substation and Electrical Departments. Coordinate with Training Department to ensure that employees are completing their training on schedule. Responsible, along with the Senior Engineers for evaluation and training of current employees and trainees.

Provide mentoring to the new Associate Engineers on the aspects of the New Haven Substation Department.



Familiarity with Traction Power Systems, Constant Tension Catenary Systems, Traction and Signal Power Distribution Systems, and Distribution Systems.

Knowledge of the SCADA systems and Lockout/ Tagout (LOTO) procedures as they pertain to the de-energizing high voltage lines and equipment.

Working knowledge of OHSA regulations, Roadway Worker Safety Procedures, Power Department Safety procedures, and IEEE and NEC standards.

Working knowledge of utility practices and procedures.

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with internal/external customers, with all levels of non-agreement and agreement staff and to coordinate multiple departments for task completion.

Project management skills to develop project scope, progress, schedules and budget.

Strong verbal presentation and written communication skills.

Strong analytical skills with the ability to resolve complex technical issues.

Strong motivation and self-starter.

Must be able to work in a high-profile/high-pressure environment.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and/or comparable software applications

Must be available twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week as required.

Must be able to implement and participate in Metro-North Railroad’s Safety Program.

Must possess a valid driver's license.



Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and/or related field. Demonstrated equivalent experience, education and/or technical credentials to include four (4) additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in the electric traction power field, electrified commuter railroad transportation environment or utility. Related experience will be considered.

Minimum of five (5) years of experience working with utilities and on capital projects.

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week operating department managing a diverse union workforce.



Knowledge of the collective bargaining process.

Knowledge of Metro-North's policies, procedures, accounting, budget and payroll processes.

Knowledge of Metro-North Railroad's Safety Program.

Knowledge of the Metro North’s Power Department procedures.



This is a federally regulated position subject to both pre-employment and continuous random toxicological screening.

As an employee of Metro-North Railroad you may be required to complete a New York State financial disclosure statement, if you earn more than $95,534.00 or if you hold a position designated as a policy maker.

Additional Criteria for Current Employees: Current Metro-North employees must be in active service to be eligible for consideration. Agreement Employees applying for a position outside of their present craft are required to have worked in your current union for at least one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline to be eligible to apply for a posted position, and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, including on-the-job training or lock-in requirement, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.). If you are transferring to another craft, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present union. Non-agreement employees must have worked in your current position for a minimum of one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline. Along with a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), employees are also subject to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation not limited to discipline records and performance assessments.
