Micro Encoder Inc. (MEI) an R&D company develops software, sensors and measurement technologies for state-of-the-art industrial inspection applications.  We are seeking an Applied Physicist to join our world-class research and development team.


We are looking for an enthusiastic, flexible contributor to:

  • Engage in development of optical sensors and systems from first-principle physics analysis through detailed engineering studies.
  • Contribute expertise to a variety of optical and electromagnetic research topics.
  • Work in cross-disciplinary teams with electrical and mechanical engineers.
  • Provide system-level analysis of sensor and optical microscope prototypes and their product targets.
  • Conduct detailed numerical simulations, using industry-standard tools such as Zemax and COMSOL.
  • Design, develop, and operate laboratory test systems for testing product prototypes.
  • Perform data processing and analysis of laboratory and simulation results.
  • Generate intellectual property related to the field of dimensional metrology.
  • Work with outside vendors for fabrication of prototypes.
  • Engage in regular, clear, written and oral communication with fellow engineers, scientists, and managers.




M.S. or Ph.D. in Physics, Optical Engineering, or related field



  • Minimum 3 years industry experience related to sensors and sensing systems.
  • Generalist physics background and understanding.
  • Strong working knowledge of numerical analysis using tools like MATLAB, Python, or Mathematica.
  • Experience with industry-standard simulation software, such as COMSOL or Zemax.
  • Laboratory experience with precision displacement sensors, positioning platforms, data acquisition hardware and software.
  • Able to simulate the performance of measurement systems using theoretical and computational methods.



  • Knowledge of precision measurement tools including hand tools, CMMs, microscopes.
  • Knowledge of precision measurement and metrology
  • Knowledge of Japanese language and business culture
